JoJo Siwa Reveals Her “Gay Awakening Story,” Including Demi Lovato and Jenna Dewan
Siwa, 19, rapped about her experience in a TikTok video titled, “My Gay Awakening Story.”
“When I was 12 years old, Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” single from her 2015 Confident album was out,” Siwa revealed.
The alumna of Dance Moms said, “It was one of my favorite songs and I listened to it often. I did not understand what that meant at the time, but I do now that I am older.”
Then she remembered that “After a few years, Jenna Dewan appeared on Lip Sync Battle. She performed a fantastic Magic Mike routine, which I very much watched every day, adding to her younger self, “Little me, she had no idea she was lesbian.”
Years later, on her first date with a man who “wanted to have sex with me,” she had an “awakening.”
“And I quickly realized, disgusted by the concept, that guys are not my thing, since I did not want to and had never wanted to date a man. Women are my gig, must go, “She immediately terminated the video and went off camera while saying this.
She kept the caption straightforward with “Enjoy.”
Siwa came out as LGBTQ in a series of TikTok and Instagram posts in January 2021. When she lip-synced Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” following a day with the TikTok group Pride House LA, viewers questioned whether she was disclosing her sexuality. She verified this by wearing a T-shirt with the phrase BEST GAY COUSIN EVER.
Siwa told PEOPLE in April of the following year that her declaration was the final item she had not shared with the public. And was influenced by her love for her then-girlfriend Kylie Prew, which began as a platonic relationship and blossomed into a passionate one in late 2020. (Siwa’s currently dating TikTokker Avery Cyrus.)
Initially, Siwa did not want to “identify” her sexuality.
“I enjoy gay,” she declared at the time. “Technically, I am pansexual because that’s how I’ve always been throughout my entire life; my human is my human.”
She continued, “I never intended [my coming out] to be a huge issue.” Never before had someone with such a young following base officially acknowledged as LGBTQ.
“I’ve known from childhood,” Siwa stated. (“I did too,” her mom Jessalynn said. “A mother will know.” They were also aware that telling the world was risky. Siwa added, “I have a lot that may have been eliminated if not for my romantic relationships.”
While she faced criticism, new admirers such as Elton John, Meghan Trainor, and Kerry Washington praised her candor. She stated, “I’ve never had this much support from the world.” “I believe this is the first time I’ve felt this personally fulfilled.”
“Performing has always brought me immense joy,” she continued. “But for the first time in my life, I am overcome with joy. I am extremely pleased with myself.”
