Paramount Pictures Announces a New “Naked Gun” Film

Fans of “Naked Gun” can rejoice as Paramount’s long-rumored plans for an untitled fourth film have finally materialized, with one of Hollywood’s top action stars assuming Leslie Nielsen’s illustrious comic role as Detective Frank Drebin’s son.

Here is a brief synopsis of the first installment of the “Naked Gun” series, “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!,” from Paramount for those who haven’t had the good fortune to witness Nielsen’s comedic brilliance in action:

“The Police Squad’s own granite-jawed, rock-brained policeman Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, stumbles onto a mind-control plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. The laugh-o-meter is blown to pieces as Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams, and an odd variety of others join the wacky antics.”

David Zucker confirms a Naked Gun reboot is in the works

Three “Naked Gun” films were ultimately produced, each of which was influenced by Nielsen’s 1982 ABC crime comedy parody “Police Squad.” In 1991 and 1994, respectively, the sequels “The Naked Gun 212: The Smell of Fear” and “Naked Gun 33+1: The Final Insult” were made available.

This kind of movie is no longer produced, according to @BigRedVikin9 on Twitter. But according to reports, Paramount is prepared to refute that assertion and has engaged an unexpected acting powerhouse to assist in bringing “Naked Gun” into the future.

In the Naked Gun Revival, Liam Neeson Will Take the Lead.

Liam Neeson, a celebrated actor, and action hero is reportedly planning to play Frank Drebin’s son in the “Naked Gun” reboot, trying to fill Leslie Nielsen’s spoof-loving shoes (via Deadline).

Other information regarding the film, including its premise, is apparently being kept under wraps, but it has been made known that Seth MacFarlane will produce and that Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer will be directing. The screenplay was written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, “Family Guy” writer Mark Hentemann, and “Ted” writer Alec Sulkin.

While the tone of Paramount’s upcoming “Naked Gun” picture is still unknown, many fans are concerned that Liam Neeson won’t be a good fit for the pun-filled project, while others believe the “Taken” star may take to it like a duck to water.

Twitter user @MikaEn2305 commented, “Liam Neeson may be incredibly humorous, but the original trilogy is so wonderful and legendary. I find it difficult to imagine how anything could even come close to it, they tweeted. @adancastillo84 commented: “It’ll be fantastic. Similar to Nielsen’s performance in Airplane, where the humor comes from his deadpan delivery, Neeson’s performance will be funny. Think about Liam Neeson’s roles in Life’s Too Short and Ted.”

Deadline claims that discussions on a “Naked Gun” revival originally started following Nielsen’s passing in 2010. The success of another ’80s series reboot, “Top Gun: Maverick,” gave them fresh life after they apparently died out for a period. According to Deadline, no official approval has been obtained, but it seems like everything is now in place for the revival to proceed.
