About What is the Album? Do the Songs Have a Swiftian Theme?

Swift outlined the project’s premise and subject when she made the announcement. She penned:

We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made ages and pray that we aren’t—right this minute—about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.

This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching—hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve … we’ll meet ourselves.

Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight.

Swift has provided some insight into the themes of specific tracks, revealing that the opening song, “Lavender Haze,” would discuss her six-year romance with Joe Alwyn.

Track 1 on Midnights is called “Lavender Haze,” she remarked. When I was watching Mad Men, I heard the term “lavender haze. It sounded interesting, so I looked it up. And it turns out that it was a frequent way for people to express being in love in the 1950s. You were in the all-pervasive love glow if you were described as being in the “lavender haze.” And I found that to be incredibly lovely.

Theoretically, she added, “when you’re in the ‘lavender haze,’ you’ll do anything to stay there. “And don’t let anyone push you off that cloud. Since we live in the era of social media and the world will weigh in if they find out whether you’re in love with someone, I believe that many people now, not just “public personalities,” have to cope with this. Similar to my six-year relationship, we have had to ignore bizarre rumors and tabloid coverage. The act of disregarding those crap in order to preserve the true stuff is what this song is about.

Prior to the album’s release, Swift shared on Spotify the five themes that served as the album’s inspiration.

The first thing that kept me up at night and served as inspiration for the Midnights album was self-loathing, Swift revealed on Monday, October 17.

I love coming on here to tell you good news, or to share a new project with you. It’s not my favorite thing in the world to have to tell you the news I’m sad about. I’m so sorry, but I cannot reschedule the shows that we’ve postponed. Although refunds have been available since we first postponed the Lover Fest shows, many of you hung onto your tickets and I too hung onto the idea that we could reschedule.

This is an unprecedented pandemic that has changed everyone’s plans and no one knows what the touring landscape is going to look like in the near future. I’m so disappointed that I won’t be able to see you in person as soon as I wanted to. I miss you terribly and can’t wait ’til we can all safely be at shows together again. – Taylor Swift

One insider claimed, “Taylor has some extremely ambitious plans in place.” She is eager to resume her travels after such a lengthy yet productive hiatus.
