The upcoming American fantasy adventure movie Slumberland was written by David Guion and Michael Handelman and directed by Francis Lawrence. It is based on Winsor McCay’s comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.
Jason Momoa, Marlow Barkley, Chris O’Dowd, Kyle Chandler, and Weruche Opia all have roles in the movie. Slumberland is set to come out in select theatres on November 11, 2022, before Netflix makes it available to stream on November 18, 2022.
What Is Slumberland About?
In the comics and the first movie, the main character was a young boy named Nemo. In the new reimagining, however, the main character is a young girl named Nema. The name “Nemo,” or in this case “Nema,” comes from Greek and means “Nobody” in English.
The name has been linked to sea stories, like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’s Captain Nemo and Finding Nemo’s Nemo the clownfish. What has this to do with Slumberland? Most “Nemos” in books are explorers who are looking for something. They spend most of their time alone, but they do make a few friends along the way. This story sounds a lot like…
Nema used to live with her father. One night before bed, her father told her a magical story about a place called Slumberland. It’s a world made of both dreams and nightmares (yes, like The Sandman). It’s a place where anything you wish for will come true. After he dies, she finds a strange map that, according to the legend, will lead her to Slumberland.
When she goes to sleep that night, she wakes up in that world, sitting on her (now magical) bed. There, she meets a very well-known person named Flip. Flip is a cute prankster who always seems to get into trouble in Slumberland. Like how Artful Dodger takes Oliver under his wing in Oliver Twist, Flip and Nema become friends, and together they try to find Nema’s dead father in the ever-changing world of dreams.
Cast of Slumberland
Nema will be Marlow Barkley’s first role in a full-length movie. She is known for playing Sophie Cooper on the TV show Single Parents and for doing the voices for the Disney show Amphibia. She is also working on a number of upcoming projects, such as Spirited, a musical update of Charles Dickens’s classic novel A Christmas Carol that will come out on Apple TV+ in 2022.
In the 1989 version, Mickey Rooney was the voice of Flip. Jason Momoa will play him in the new movie (Aquaman). Momoa is best known for his role as Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki, in the hit HBO show Game of Thrones.
The Handmaid’s Tale star Luxton Handspiker will play a new character named Matt. He can be seen in the trailer driving some kind of dreamland vehicle with Nema and Flip. Kyle Chandler will play Nema’s father, whose name hasn’t been decided yet. Chandler is known for his parts in Bloodline, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Game Night.
Agent Red, Agent Orange, Agent Green, and Agent Brown are the names of four characters. Tonya Cornelisse (Yellowjackets), Jamillah Ross (Chucky), Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You), and Leslie Adlam (Becky) play them, in that order. It’s not clear what these agents will do in Slumberland or whether Nema and Flip will see them as friends or foes.
