How Evan Peters Survived Going Method on Dahmer

Most people are somewhat familiar with the concept of “method acting,” but unless you practice it professionally, you may be unaware of how deep that rabbit hole goes. The Method is an official system developed by Lee Strasberg in the early 1900s.

It’s all about immersing yourself in a character in order to convey it as accurately as possible. Many prominent actors, including Hollywood luminaries like Daniel Day-Lewis and Johnny Depp, are method actors. Method acting can sometimes produce Oscar-worthy performances that fans can’t get enough of, as in the case of Daniel Day-Lewis.

Unfortunately, method acting can also lead to catastrophe. In current times, the most renowned example is Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” He pushed himself so hard with seclusion and sleep deprivation to prepare for the role that he overdosed on sleep medication and died before the film was released.

When using method acting to prepare for tough parts like playing real-life serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the recently released Netflix mini-series “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” actors like Evan Peters must keep tragedies like these in mind. At a recent press conference, Peters addressed what he did to immerse himself as deeply as possible in the part — and the lighthearted manner he brought himself back to reality.

Peters’ Recovery Demonstrates That Laughing Truly is the Best Medicine

Looper recently attended a press junket for Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” where the cast fielded questions from reporters about their work on the film. Peters prepared by wearing lead weights around his arms and stuffing lifts into his shoes, as well as reading and learning about Dahmer’s mindset.

“I wanted to delve into the psychology of that extreme side of human conduct, so I studied as many books as I could, psychology reports, confessions, timelines, and anything else in an attempt to understand why he did what he did.” At the same press conference, his co-star Niecy Nash admitted that she was praying for him since he was so immersed in the character that she was concerned about his emotional well-being. Thankfully, Peters found it relatively easy to exit that terrible mental place. He resorted to romantic comedies and relatives to cheer him up when filming was completed and he was free to expel the venom he had absorbed in order to play Dahmer to the best of his ability. “Now it’s time to bring in the joy and lightness and watch some comedies and romances and go back to St. Louis and see my family and friends and…you know, watch ‘Step Brothers,'” he told himself, prompting Nash to make a hilarious remark about Peters starring in the next big Hollywood romantic comedy. Everyone in the room laughed, which begs the question: which Hollywood studio will be gutsy enough to make that movie a reality? Time will only tell.
