Fans of Rick and Morty are used to having to wait a long time for new episodes. Between seasons 2 and 3 and between seasons 3 and 4, there was a two-year break. Between episodes 5 and 6 of season 4, there was a break of almost five months.
Thanks to seasons 5 and 6 coming out about a year apart, there have been a lot of new Rick and Morty episodes in the last two years. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt a little to find out that the show would be taking another break in the middle of season 6.
Season 6 might be one of the best seasons of the show so far because it finally explores and adds to the show’s canon without giving up the creators’ freedom to do whatever they want. So far this season, we’ve learned that Rick Prime, who is Morty’s (Justin Roiland) real grandpa, killed Rick’s (Justin Roiland) family. In the meantime, Beth and Space Beth (Sarah Chalke) was having an affair.

Morty’s mind was broken while Summer (Spencer Grammer) did a “Die Hard” in a Blips and Chitz game. After Rick wouldn’t wash his dishes, the Smiths who lived at night became enemies with them. After a fate-changing alien is used to make fortune cookies, Jerry (Chris Parnell) almost had to have sex with his mother.

In the last episode of part one of season 6, “Juricksic Mort,” enlightened dinosaurs close the hole that was made when the citadel was destroyed in the season 5 finale. They do this as a small favor to Rick. The dinosaurs came back to Earth to share what they knew and make it a free and prosperous place for everyone. They didn’t know that every other world they’d been to was destroyed by an angry, sentient asteroid whose only goal is to kill them.

Even though this wasn’t the most exciting or important episode to take a break on, the cosmic rift was closed and Rick’s portal gun was fixed. In typical Rick and Morty style, Rick thanks the dinosaurs for closing the rift for him, since that could have been a multi-episode storyline (even though the series has never really done true multi-episode arcs). In another show, that might be seen as taking the easy way out, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from Rick and Morty.

But just because Rick and Morty’s portal gun is fixed doesn’t mean their adventures will go on as usual. Now, it will be easier for Rick to find Rick Prime and finally get his revenge. The trailer for the return of season 6 shows that Rick is ready to ask Morty for help with this task. You can see more about what to expect from Rick and Morty’s return in the trailer below.
