Who is Candy Montgomery?
Lester Gaylor and Richard Parker, two of Betty Gore’s neighbors, discovered her dead on June 13, 1980.
The murder weapon was discovered in the Texas house Betty shared with her husband and kids, where her body was discovered mutilated with 41 axe wounds.
Her other neighbor, Candy, was identified thanks to fingerprint and footprint evidence discovered at the crime scene. Candy was detained on June 27, 1980, and she was accused of killing Betty.
Candy Admitted to Murdering Betty
In October 1980, when Candy’s trial got underway, she admitted to murdering Betty out of self-defense. The attacker claimed that Betty tried to use the axe on her first after learning about her husband Alan Gore’s affair with Candy.
The murderer additionally asserted that there was a struggle between the two women as a result of the victim losing control of the weapon at one point.

Candy claimed Betty was the aggressor when the alleged struggle reached its peak, which is why she ultimately brutally killed Betty with the ax. Candy was cleared of all charges brought against her because she pleaded to self-defense.
Candy Montgomery, Did She Get Prisoned?
On June 13, 1980, in Wylie, Texas, Candace “Candy” Montgomery was charged with the murder of Betty Gore, a close friend of hers. When Betty confronted Montgomery about her extramarital relationship with Allan Gore, she had just stopped by the Gores’ home to pick up a swimsuit for their daughter. After a struggle, Montgomery allegedly used a three-foot-long axe to stab Gore 41 times.

Allan, who was out of town on business, asked his neighbors to look into his wife’s whereabouts when he couldn’t get through to her on the phone. They found their infant daughter Bethany sobbing in her crib and Betty dead in the utility room.
After being questioned for weeks, Allan Gore finally confessed to the police his relationship with Candy, giving them a justification. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Montgomery was detained by police and released after posting a $100,000 bond (opens in new tab).
Four months later, the eight-day Candy Montgomery trial began. The defense claimed that Montgomery used self-defense after Gore approached Candy with the axe he had taken from the garage. According to hypnosis sessions, Montogmery had a “dissociative reaction” during the altercation and her rage was brought on by childhood trauma.
On October 29, 1980, a jury exonerated Candy Montgomery of all murder-related charges.
Candy Montgomery, is She Still a Living?
Candy Montgomery is indeed still alive and was most recently employed in Georgia as a therapist. She was born in November 1949, making her 72 years old right now.
According to reports, Jessica Biel attempted to contact Candy in real life in order to prepare for her upcoming role; however, the actress told Entertainment Weekly that Candy “was not interested.” Robert Udashen, one of Candy’s attorneys in the homicide case, who was a “great resource of knowledge,” was the next person Biel looked to.
Additionally, Jim Atkinson and Joe Bob Briggs, journalists who co-wrote Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs, assisted Biel. “The members of both of these families, the survivors, the relatives, and Candy herself were walking information bombs about this tale. She had been interviewed, which was invaluable to me.”

Regarding her portrayal of Candy Montgomery, Biel said to Variety: “I set out to make this character who really, truly caused you to feel conflicted. She has you with her. You’re with her, but hold on, I’m not sure whether I’m with her either.”
“You identify with the actions as the narrative progresses. On some level, you understand. You somehow share a human connection. At the conclusion, you’re still kind of with her “Biel kept talking. “I wanted to produce that. Just have empathy, that’s all. I didn’t portray this character as the bad guy.”
Candy Montgomery: Where is She Right Now?
Candy Montogomery, her husband Pat, and their kids left Texas in 1980 and relocated to Georgia as a result of the trial. Four years after the divorce, Candy took on her maiden name of Candace Wheeler. Ironically, she eventually became a mental health counselor, according to Newsweek (opens in new tab).
