Dead To Me, a Netflix original series, has been gone for over two years, so its return has been eagerly anticipated.

After the car crash cliffhanger of Season 2, Jen and Judy were thrown right back into the action for the Season 3 premiere on November 17.

Despite fans’ eager anticipation for Dead To Me’s return for a third season, the premiere episode paused to honor Ed Asner.

Dead to Me Pays Tribute to Ed Asner

After the events of the premiere episode of Season 3 concluded, Dead To Me paused to honor the late actor Ed Asner.

At the end of the episode, before the credits rolled, a title card simply read:

To Ed Asner’s Memory.

Ed Asner’s Career

Ed Asner, who was born in Kansas City in November 1929 but didn’t make his acting debut until 1957, quickly became a fan favorite.

Following that, he appeared in more than 400 films and TV shows, but his breakthrough role was as the lovable slacker Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Ed Asner has had several other notable roles, including as the grumpy Carl Fredricksen in Up from Pixar, as Santa Claus in Elf, in the John Wayne western El Dorado, in The Bronx Zoo, in Thunder Alley, and in seasons 1 and 3 of Cobra Kai as Sid Weinberg.

Ed also lent his famous voice to several roles, including J. Jonah Jameson in the 1994 Spider-Man series and the animated series Gargoyles.

Ed had several nominations for his work throughout his distinguished career, and he won five Golden Globes and an astounding seven Primetime Emmy Awards.

Ed passed away at the age of 91 due to natural causes on August 29, 2022, and his death was welcomed with an outpouring of love from fans and other actors.

Who was Ed Asner?

In the first season of Dead To Me, Ed Asner portrayed Abe Rifkin.

When Judy first started working at the nursing home, one of the residents, Abe, became close to her. The two became very close, and they often helped and advised one another.

Abe appeared in only one episode of the first season, “I Have to Be Honest,” and then passed away.

As Abe died off-screen, Judy was unable to say her final goodbyes to him, making his death all the more heartbreaking.

Season Three of Dead to Me Pays Tribute to Ed Asner

You may recognize Ed Asner as Abe from the movie Dead To Me. They were roommates in the retirement community where Judy worked, and he ended up moving there. After forming a close bond, we were shocked to learn of Abe’s death at the end of the first season.

The second season of the show aired after Ed Asner’s death in 2021 at the age of 91, despite his having won seven Emmys. To date, he has appeared in more than 400 film and television roles. According to his website on Rotten Tomatoes, Ed is “a legend of both comedy and drama in both cinema and television,” with the unique distinction of being the only actor to win an Emmy in both categories for portraying the same character, Lou Grant, in different eras.

As one critic put it, “Despite his strong political activity, Asner remained tough to detest and one of Hollywood’s hardest working performances.”

Where You’ve Seen Late Actor Ed Asner

After watching Dead to Me’s homage to the late Ed Asner, viewers may find themselves wondering what other roles they may have seen him in. Asner’s role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s was a breakthrough role for him. Later, he starred in a spinoff that he had a leading role in called simply Lou Grant.

Asner, who played Santa in the holiday comedy Elf, also has a string of recent successes to his name. Carl Fredrickson, whose character he voiced in the Pixar film Up, brought many spectators to tears.
