Coach Thomas was a great leader for the Littlefield ISD sports teams, and he was a great example for the Littlefield ISD athletes. Even though he always tried to make LISD’s sports teams win, he also worked hard to use those teams to teach students how to be good people.
Students in the District, his fellow teachers and coaches, and the whole Littlefield school community will miss him a lot. We send Coach Thomas’s family our deepest condolences and ask everyone to be there for them as they deal with their loss.
The District is grateful for the continued support of Coach Thomas’ family from the Littlefield community, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Thomas’s Littlefield Career
The Avalanche-Journal said that Thomas has been the head football coach and athletic director at Littlefield since February 2021, when he was hired.
Jimmy Thomas, a former coach at Bushland, has been hired by the Littlefield Wildcats, which breaks with tradition. Thomas said, “They’ve had a lot of tradition, and I’m going, to be honest,” when he found out he was one of the finalists for the job. I feel both honored and a little bit shy about being chosen to lead this project.
The Fritch native and West Texas A&M graduate led the Bushland Falcons to a 47-25 record over six seasons, according to A-J records. In 2017, they made it to the Class 4A Division II state quarterfinals, and in 2019, they won the Class 3A Division I regional round with a 12-1 record.
Thomas quit his job as head football coach at Bushland in June 2020 to take a job as a manager at Channing. Thomas’ Friday night light hole went unfilled for 16 of his 24 years as head coach because the high school didn’t have football. He told the A-J that it only took him a semester to realize how much he missed the competition.
When Thomas got a job at Littlefield, his youngest son Jason had just graduated from Bushland and was going to school at Texas Tech. His in-laws lived in Clovis, New Mexico, so the timing was perfect.
Then Thomas thought, “I guess God had a plan for all of this.” “I promise that when it comes to coaching, I won’t take anything for granted. I’m really excited. I guess that was just a trick to get us to trust them.
