The Best Christmas Movies You Must Watch on Disney Plus!

Every streaming service has a bunch of holiday movies, from old Hollywood movies to animated series. It can be hard to know where to start when looking for something to watch during the holidays. Then there’s the question of whether you want a raunchy holiday comedy or a family-friendly tearjerker, a Christmas Day classic, or a favorite holiday movie that isn’t a holiday movie.

And do you want something short like a Simpsons episode or a slow-moving movie to go with your food coma? There are a lot of different things to watch on Disney+, and you may already be looking for a few classics to make the most of your holiday fun.

Cool Running

If you’re a millennial, there’s a good chance you loved this Disney movie when you were a kid. It’s a broad comedy with a catchy reggae-pop soundtrack. Even though it’s not a Christmas movie, I don’t think anyone will complain.

The cult favorite has a wintry, snowy setting, a great supporting role for John Candy, a happy, uplifting story about (real) sports underdogs, and a song with the immortal and hard-to-argue-with lyric “Jamaica, we have a bobsled team.

Frozen

With its snowy lure, Frozen is hard for kids to turn down, and parents won’t mind: It’s like putting Xanax in the punch bowl when you were a kid. The popular animated movie with Olaf, the talking snowman, and Elsa, the fairy ice princess, has become a modern classic because it is funny and shows sisters in a good way.

Even though there are a lot of sequels (all of which are on Disney+), nothing is as good as the first one. Just be aware that it might make you want to watch it again and again.

Home Alone

Join Kevin McCallister, who was accidentally left at home in his parents’ ’90s dream house, only to find that his territory is being invaded. This is Macaulay Culkin at his most immature. Kevin stays one step ahead of Marv (Daniel Stern) and Harry (Joe Pesci), two idiots who try to rob his house and ruin Christmas for his family.

Pesci is, of course, perfect as the bad guy with a short fuse who gets so many bad things happen to him that you almost feel sorry for him. Home Alone has become such a Christmas tradition that many families have to watch it every December. You’ll soon remember why if you watch it again or watch all of its sequels back-to-back on Disney+.

Nightmare Before Christmas

For those of us who like to watch more gothic Christmas movies, Tim Burton’s introduction to the hideous, comically dead world of Jack Skellington, with all of its stop-motion creepiness and cockeyed angles straight from a 1940s crime movie, is hard to deny. Burton has always been interested in the grim and dark sides of life.

He hits a rich vein of cynicism about the holiday season’s wasteful consumerism and fake cheer. But we get to have our cake and eat it too: Sandy Claws finally teaches Jack and the other people in Halloween Town what Christmas is about, so the story has a happy ending. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a unique classic because of how creative and rebellious it is.

The Santa Clause

Disney+ and its streaming selection have always been great for people who miss the ’90s, so it makes sense that The Santa Clause, a holiday hit from 1994, is on the service. You know the story, right? Tim Allen is a normal dad who lives in a suburb. When Santa falls off a roof, he kills Tim Allen by accident.

(When you write it down, it doesn’t sound at all like what comes next, which is funny and cute.) Our confused main character is forced to fill Santa’s shoes. All of a sudden, he’s obsessed with milk and cookies, his face is growing a white beard and his waist is getting bigger to match.

He stumbles into the role of Santa and a happy, festive ending. This year, Allen is back in the role of Santa Claus in a brand-new Disney+ show called The Santa Clauses. His character is looking for the next lucky person to get the red-and-white suit.
