In Indiana Jones 5, What Part Does Antonio Banderas Play?

The return of everyone’s favorite professor-turned-treasure-hunter in “Indiana Jones 5” is shaping up to be a big deal. Harrison Ford is set to play the iconic role of Indiana Jones for the first time since 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” The still-untitled fifth film will be the last time he plays the character, the actor said (via The Hollywood Reporter).

James Mangold is taking over as director of “Logan” from Steven Spielberg, who is moving into a producer role. In “Indiana Jones 5”, which takes place in 1969, Jones is older and the story is about him during the Space Race between the US and the USSR. The archaeologist starts to doubt his government after they hire former Nazis to work at NASA in a last-ditch effort to get to the moon first (via Empire).

Lucasfilm doesn’t want to give away too much about the plot, so they only give the media a general summary. Helena, Jones’ goddaughter, is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge of the TV show “Fleabag.” Mads Mikkelsen of “Hannibal” is the latest A-lister to play the hero who travels the world.

He plays the villain Voller, and Boyd Holbrook of “Narcos” plays his sidekick Klaber. John Rhys-Davis (“The Lord of the Rings”) plays Sallah again, and Toby Jones (“Infamous”) and Shaunette Renée Wilson (“The Resident”) play Basil and Mason, respectively.

Olivier Richters, a Dutch bodybuilder, Thomas Kretschmann (“Avengers: Age of Ultron”), and Antonio Banderas have all signed on for roles that haven’t been revealed yet (“The Mask of Zorro”). But Banderas’ character in “Indiana Jones 5” hasn’t been described yet, and the actor may have let some information about him slip.

Reports Say That Banderas’ Part in Indiana Jones 5 is Much Smaller Than Expected.

As part of the “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” press tour, Antonio Banderas is making the rounds to different news outlets. Even though the animated sequel comes out in December, someone quickly asked the actor about his role in “Indiana Jones 5.” Fans are used to actors being coy and not giving away any real information about their characters, but Banderas gave away a lot.

Banderas said in an interview with Collider, “My part is so small that it’s almost like a cameo. He is just a friend of Indiana’s character, and he is looking for Indiana because he needs something from his friend. But he doesn’t take up much time in the movie. He is, however, very happy to be a part of a story that is part of the history of movies.” So far as I can tell, the Spanish actor will be the next actor to play a friend of Dr. Jones in a short scene in the next movie.

Banderas adds another friend to Indy’s long list of cool people. In “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” Jim Broadbent played Charles Stanforth. In “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Last Crusade,” John Rhys-Davies played Sallah. Many fans thought Banderas would have a bigger part in the movie, but his role as the archaeologist’s friend has become an iconic part of the series.
