Jammu Festival: What Are the Famous Festivals There Celebrate?

People in Jammu and the rest of northern India celebrate Baisakhi every year on the first day of Vaishakh. Baisakhi is also called the harvest festival, and it is thought to be a good time to get married.

Baisakhi is the harvest festival of Jammu and Kashmir. This is because most of the people who live there are Sikh. Baisakhi is one of Kashmir’s most popular holidays, and it is celebrated in the state in huge ways.

Kashmir is often called “paradise on Earth,” and this is a good name for it. It is beautiful because of its beautiful valley views and green nature, but its festivals add to its beauty. People try to forget about all the problems between them and enjoy the holidays together in peace. This is a perfect way to describe how beautiful this holy land is.

There are more festivals in India than in any other country in the world. And every holiday is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm, a big feast, and a lot of fun. Every religion has a hundred festivals, and every state has a hundred more. This makes this country holy, sacred, and full of different cultures.

Urs

On the last day of Ramzan or Ramadan, when people fast for a month, they celebrate Eid Ul Fitr. On this day, Namaz is said six times, and the fast is broken with a feast. This peaceful festival ends with the exchange of sweets and the wearing of new clothes, as well as getting together with family and sharing wishes.

In the second half of the year, Muslims celebrate Eid ul Azha, also called Bakra Eid, by killing a goat, a camel, or a sheep. It comes from their idea of Kurbani, which means “sacrifice.” Urs or Ziarats is an important festival in Kashmir that Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs all take part.

It’s a big party with people from many different groups, and it happens many times a year. This festival is mostly held on the dates of the deaths of famous Muslim saints like Meesha Sahib, Batamol Sahib, and Bahauddin. On the day of Urs celebrations, the weather is often bad, but people of all religions still gather for a big party.

Eid ul Azha and Eid ul Fitr

In Kashmir, the two most important holidays for Muslims are celebrated with a big party. Since most people in Kashmir are Muslims, there are a lot of people at Muslim celebrations. Even though Eid is a big holiday all over the world and in the rest of India, too, the magic of Kashmir makes it a joy to celebrate Eid here.

Hemis Festival

Dates: June 28th to June 29th, 2023
Hemis Gompa is the biggest and richest monastery in Kashmir. It is in Ladakh, where Hemis is celebrated with a lot of pomp and show. This day has been made a holiday by the government. It is a celebration of Padmasambhava’s birthday. He is known as the founder of Tibetan Buddhism.

The celebrations take place in this monastery’s large courtyard for two days in the fifth month of the year, which is also called the Tibetan lunar month. The men wear traditional clothes, and the women wear a lot of jewelry and headgear.

The Lamas dance to the sounds of drums, horns, and cymbals. This is their traditional “Chaam” dance. This show is very traditional and shows the culture of Ladakh. It is also a very important part of Tantric Buddhism. The story also talks about a party to celebrate winning over evil and to remember how bravely Padmasambhava fought evil demons and won. Baisakhi

Baisakhi is a very important Sikh holiday that is celebrated all over the country on April 13. In India, Sikhs celebrate the New Year on this day. India’s harvest season starts on this date. Because there are so many Sikhs in the state of Kashmir, this festival is celebrated in a huge way there. For the Sikhs of Kashmir, the start of the harvest season in Northern India is a very important cultural event.

Tulip Festival

April to May of 2023
Kashmir has hundreds of Tulip Gardens, so in the springtime, the state is full of Tulips. Srinagar has the biggest tulip garden in Asia, so every year it hosts the big Tulip Festival. The festival is proud of the many different kinds of tulips that grow here. Seeing the tulips in any of these gardens in the spring is a sight to behold.

For someone who isn’t from Kashmir, it is a mesmerizing and breathtaking sight. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Kashmir, is the place where the Tulip Festival is held. At the festival, you can see local handicrafts, delicious food, cultural shows, and, of course, tulips.

Shikara Festival

Dates: March 2023
Shikara is the heart and soul of the Dal Lake in Kashmir. It should be celebrated once a year. The government of Kashmir started this festival in 2016 to get more people to visit the area. Shikaras are painted and dressed up in beautiful ways for the festival.

Shikaras take part in Canoe Polo Match, Shikara Race, and Dragon Boat Race. There are also other cultural events that give you a taste of the culture of Kashmir. It usually takes place in July or August.

Gurez Festival

Gurez is a quiet valley in the Himalayas that is about 123 km from the capital of Kashmir. It is about 8,000 feet above sea level. The beautiful valley has many beautiful views because it is on the old Silk Route. The Neelum River flows through the Gurez valley, which is a great place to go river rafting. Every year, the people of Gurez host a festival where they show off their crafts, foods, and culture.

At the festival, everyone gets together and does fun things like river rafting, trekking, zorbing, cycling, and so on. A lot of people also take part in competitions for things like painting and drawing. There are also many musical programs that show Kashmiri culture that is fun to see. In the beautiful valley of Gurez, the Gurez Festival takes place in July or August.

Lohri

Date: January 13, 2023
The Lohri festival is held every year on January 13. It marks the end of the worst part of winter and celebrates the harvest. It is a festival that takes place in January to celebrate the harvest of sugarcane crops. People light a bonfire, sing songs, dance, and eat winter treats made of corn, peanuts, sesame, and jaggery. People in Punjab and Jammu like to celebrate it.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir stands out a lot on a map of the world. The political fights and beautiful scenery might be the first things that come to mind, but the celebrations are just as interesting. When there is a festival in India, people dance, put on a big show, fast, wear fancy clothes, eat delicious food, and show a lot of hospitality. Kashmiris are fun to watch when they celebrate and eat at festivals, whether they are Hindu, Muslim, or Buddhist.
