Delivery by Christmas Review: What is It About?

This review of the Netflix film Delivery by Christmas (2022) contains no spoilers.

At this most lovely time of the year, we may find comfort and delight in even the most poorly performed, poorly written, and cheesiest of movies. With its offbeat characters and cliched holiday imagery, the Polish romantic comedy flick Delivery by Christmas is sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

The film fails to hit the right humorous notes and fails to take the relationship far enough, leaving me feeling more downcast than festive by the conclusion.

Casting a wide net, Aleksandra Kulakowska and Maciej Prykowski’s film features the likes of Tomasz Schuchardt, Lukasz Simlat, Miroslaw Baka, Dorota Kolak, Piotr Pacek, Zdzislaw Wardejn, Maria Maj, Monika Frajczyk, Marek Kalita, Justyna Karlowska, Barbara Kurzaj, Malgorzata Everyone involved should be commended for the generally solid performances they turn in, the engaging chemistry they share with their other cast members, and the straightforward manner in which they present the story.

Delivery by Christmas

The plot follows delivery driver Maria as she rushes to finish her shift so she may spend Christmas with her son Maks. A jealous coworker, however, messes up her deliveries and creates mayhem. She has to hurry to get the presents back to the right people.

The voyage becomes complicated when she meets Krzysztof, a businessman who wants to propose but needs to retrieve his engagement ring from his grandfather and tells Maria to do it. On their journey, they clash, reconcile, and grow close to one another; all the while, a gentle romance blossoms between them.

Since much of the action takes place in a car, there isn’t much to build suspense or seriously get in their way, and the picture moves at a somewhat leisurely pace as a result. We get to witness little micro subplots throughout of the people that have been touched by the concerns and received the incorrect gifts, but these aren’t as amusing as I think they were intended or could have been and can be a little too serious for a Christmas picture.

The tale also performs two or three flashbacks, which didn’t work for me. The movie suffered from a clumsy, disorienting effect because of it.

The message conveyed is what makes a film appropriate for the holiday season. It should have a clear, succinct message for its audiences. This picture missed that goal a little, as the ending was straightforward and plain. In my opinion, the story’s central theme is about making amends and starting over.

Despite its somewhat predictable plot and an overabundance of tired Christmas clichés like atonement, family, hope, and holiday cheer, this film manages to be enjoyable nonetheless. It might just be a nice, easy Christmas movie.
