Women move mountains will be the topic of this year’s International Mountain Day (IMD) on December 11.
Women play a crucial role in the environmental protection and socioeconomic development of mountains. Frequently, they are the primary managers of mountain resources, protectors of biodiversity, keepers of traditional knowledge, stewards of local culture, and specialists in traditional medicine.
Increasing climate variability, coupled with a lack of investment in mountain agriculture and rural development, has frequently compelled men to seek alternate livelihoods elsewhere. Therefore, women have assumed many historically male responsibilities, although mountain women are frequently unseen because of a lack of decision-making power and unequal access to resources
As farmers, market vendors, businesswomen, craftsmen, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, mountain women and girls, especially in remote areas, have the potential to be significant change agents. When rural women have access to resources, services, and opportunities, they become a driving force in the fight against hunger, malnutrition, and rural poverty, as well as an active participants in the development of mountain economies.
International Mountain Day 2022 is a chance to promote gender equality and so enhance social justice, livelihoods, and resiliency.

Unfortunately, the mountains are threatened by global warming and overexploitation. As the global climate continues to warm, mountain people, who are among the world’s poorest, confront more difficult survival conditions. The rising temperatures also cause mountain glaciers to melt at unprecedented rates, threatening the freshwater sources of millions of people living downstream.
