Police Said the 88-year-old Driver Killed in the Parkway Incident Attempted to Drive Across the Roadway.

A woman, 88, was killed in a collision on the Garden State Parkway in Monmouth County early on Saturday when she attempted to drive from the right shoulder over three lanes of traffic and was hit by an SUV, the New Jersey State Police said on Sunday.

Police reported that West Orange resident Joan Butler passed away from injuries sustained in the 10:45 a.m. collision.

Sgt. Alejandro Goez, a spokesman for Aberdeen police, said in an email on Sunday that a preliminary investigation revealed the Ford passenger car Butler was operating was parked on the right shoulder in the southbound local lanes close to milepost 120.5. The Lexus then struck the Ford driver who was attempting to cross all three lanes of traffic.

After being transported to the Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, Butler was confirmed dead once she arrived there.
