Blair Imani on Her Bisexuality

💭 I first realized I was “not like the other kids” back when I was 8. I had a crush on this boy in my grade, and I simultaneously had a crush on his older sister. I remember feeling alarmed and trying to convince myself that it was probably because they looked similar but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the crushes stood independent of each other.⁣

Back then in the early 2000s bisexuality wasn’t discussed very often. It 𝘸𝘢𝘴 brought up to insinuate some male celebrity was “secretly gay,” or discussed as something that made someone “promiscuous.” Both of these things are biphobic bullshit and in my case, it made me think bisexuality must “not be real.” I decided I must be a lesbian! I wasn’t really aware that sexual orientation isn’t a binary thing of straight & gay.⁣

When I was 15 I came out to my mom, @krissylupu. Mom is very hip and educated on child development so she likely peeped at my queer energy. I made her get up from her home office and sit on the couch in the living room before ceremoniously revealing, “MOTHER, I AM A LESBIAN!” 🥳🏳️‍🌈

Without skipping a beat she said, “No, you’re probably bisexual.” 😳 I didn’t even know what that was. While I got over the fact that my mother had “ruined” my big reveal we looked up the definition of bisexual on @glaad’s website, and sure enough, it suited me. ⁣

Bisexuality doesn’t mean that you agree with the idea of a gender binary. Some people think “bi” meaning “two” means forming attraction to only two genders. That might make sense to you, but as I understand it, bisexuality means forming enduring emotional/romantic/physical attractions to those of BOTH the same AND/OR differing genders from you. ⁣

If you’re bisexual when you’re single then yes, you’re bisexual when you’re in a relationship. @akeemomarali & I have been together since 2015, and I’m not suddenly straight just because we look like a heteronormative couple. ⁣

You are who you are no matter who you date. For me, that means being bisexual. So bisexual that I struggle to conceptualize straightness.
