Andrew Lincoln left the show in the ninth season’s fifth episode, “What Comes Next,” when a wounded Rick demolished the bridge he and the survivors had spent the whole season building to protect the Hilltop and other settlements from two huge walker herds that had combined.

Rick was obliterated by the explosion, prompting his friends and family to believe he died as well. Anne (also known as Jadis) discovered him moments before she was to board a mystery helicopter that needed her to transfer an asset. Rick has not been seen since, but he will return in the future.

Since Andrew Lincoln’s departure, we knew that Rick would return in a story that revealed what he did after the helicopter took him away. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Lincoln would reprise his role in a six-part series (together with Danai Gurira as Michonne) that would reunite Rick and Michonne and conclude their love story.
