The Driver Killed in the Parkway Crash Was a Nun Who Served in New Jersey for 67 Years.

The driver who died in a collision over the weekend on the Garden State Parkway was revealed to be an Essex County nun who kept volunteering after retiring.

At about 10:45 a.m. on Saturday on the Parkway in Monmouth County, a single-vehicle collision claimed the life of Sister Joan Eileen Butler, 88, of West Orange.

According to her obituary, Butler, who was born in Jersey City, joined the Sisters of Charity on September 6, 1955, and was a member for 67 years.

According to her obituary, Butler spent decades working as a nurse’s aide for hospitals in Massachusetts and New Jersey while also teaching elementary school pupils at Catholic schools in the state.

According to a traffic inquiry, Butler had parked her automobile on the right shoulder of the southbound local lanes in Aberdeen, close to milepost 120.5.

Then, according to New Jersey State Police, she attempted to drive across all three lanes and hit another car.

Butler was sent to the Holmdel Bayshore Medical Center, where she was later declared dead. Minor injuries were sustained by the 49-year-old driver of the second vehicle.

On Monday, State Police stated that the accident is still being investigated.

“Sister Joan Eileen had a contagious and upbeat attitude. Her obituary notes that her sharp wit made people around her giggle. She was very giving and always willing to lend a hand to those in need.

According to her obituary, Butler obtained her bachelor of science in elementary education from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station. She worked as a teacher in New Brunswick at Saint Peter Elementary School, Hoboken’s Our Lady of Grace School, and West Orange’s Our Lady of Lourdes School.

According to her obituary, Butler retired in 2006 and remained a resident of Our Lady of Lourdes Convent until June 2022, when she transferred to the Convent of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station.

She is survived by her sister Gloria Giaimo as well as a sizable number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The Holy Family Chapel, 2 Convent Road, Convent Station, will host services on Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Masks are necessary.

At 11 a.m., there will be a Mass of Christian Burial, and burial will take place in Holy Family Cemetery in Convent Station.
