Travon Free Early Years
Free was raised in Compton, California, together with his mother and grandparents. He played basketball at Dominguez High School, where he was enrolled. He was referred to be the “team’s top player” by the Los Angeles Times in 2002.
He made the decision to play college basketball for the Long Beach State 49ers in order to stay close to home. Free liked his prospects of landing a starting role because their program was having trouble.

Controversy with Travon Free
After a number of anti-Semitic comments from 2010 and 2011 were found on Free’s Twitter feed in November 2018, HBO announced that it had no further plans to collaborate with him and that “This kind of language is highly insulting and unforgivable.” Free expressed regret for the tweets, calling them “dumb and incredibly hurtful humor.”
After posting a video on the social media platform TikTok in April 2021 accusing Free’s Two Distant Strangers of plagiarism from a comedy sketch she had directed in December 2016 titled Groundhog Day For a Black Man, controversy broke out.
She asserts that the story of Kao’s movie is comparable to the story of Two Distant Strangers since both films center on a black man who attempts to repeatedly recreate the same day in order to survive a confrontation with the police.

Additionally, social media news organization NowThis contacted Kao in 2020 about displaying the movie on their Facebook and Instagram pages during the George Floyd demonstrations.
