What is the Storyline of My Master Has No Tail?

Tanuki antics ceased at the beginning of the Meiji period. Before the introduction of more advanced technology, these raccoon canines delighted in deceiving humans by assuming human form. However, they no longer have access to this skill. Mameda, a young tanuki girl, is determined to carry on her con artist father’s legacy, so she travels to Osaka in search of naïve victims.

Mameda’s attempts to fool everyone in her hamlet are unsuccessful. She ultimately becomes the target of a vengeful mob seeking to punish her. She seeks refuge at a theatre where she observes a rakugo performance by rakugo guru Bunko Daikokutei. Mameda, captivated by the vivid images conjured by the rakugoka’s performance, falls in love with this type of storytelling and is determines to become Bunko’s apprentice!

At first, Bunko wasn’t sure if he should take Mameda on as a disciple. Still, she finally gave in when she saw how determined the baby tanuki was to learn rakugo. The title of the manga comes from the main character’s point of view, where she talks about how strange her human mentor is in the world of rakugo. Mameda, a tanuki girl who is used to traditional Japanese culture and folklore, is the main character in this story. She isn’t ready for the 21st century, and if she goes to Mameda, she won’t be fooled by tanukis’ magic tricks. If Mameda wants to fit in with people, she needs to learn the techniques of rakugo and find different ways to impress the audience.

To get the tanuki prankster job back, Mameda changes into a human and goes to the city of Osaka, where she fights and meets a woman named Bunko. Bunko knows a lot about rakugo, and Mameda has to convince Bunko to become his apprentice so he can learn everything there is to know about rakugo and become the best non-human entertainer in Osaka. Reviews of My Master Has No Tail

Mythical creatures and obscure Japanese culture interest me, so I truly want to enjoy this animation, but I can’t sit through a single episode and have to revisit it at least three times to remember what transpired.

It feels like an experiment to explore how far a slice of life can be stretched into the “nothing occurs” zone, with the character’s backstory being superior to the main narrative. I have only seen the first half, so if the second half is better, I will not be there to see it. I generally encourage tasting something before declaring that you do not like it, however, this flavor is not for me. Best wishes on your anime travels.
