“The Whale,” a film by Darren Aronofsky based on Samuel D. Hunter‘s play of the same name, is a character study about a man’s pain and upcoming brush with death. Since it was shown for the first time at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival, the movie has gotten both praise and criticism for how it handles its main character.
The argument comes from the fact that prosthetics were used to show an obese person. Michael Schulman of The New Yorker summed up one side of the argument when he wrote, “By “humanizing” Charlie, Aronofsky seems to want to repel the viewer so that we can pat ourselves on the back for finding the man in the monster.”
Even though the response has been mixed, Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, and Hong Chau have all been praised for their roles. Fraser has been a favorite of moviegoers for a long time, but his role as Charlie is getting a lot of praise.

The charming actor has already won a lot of awards and nominations, and it seems likely that he will be nominated for an Academy Award. But we now know that if things had gone a little differently, neither Aronofsky nor Fraser would have been in the movie.
James Corden Was Originally Attached to Play Charlie
The principal character of Charlie in “The Whale” could only have been played by talk show presenter James Corden. The actor told Deadline’s Pete Hammond the tale of his close call with the project during a Q&A for the upcoming series “Mammals.”
In reference to the film, Corden informed Hammond, “Tom Ford was supposed to direct, and I was going to play that part.” Additionally, Corden mentioned that George Clooney was interested in directing the picture, but this plan fell through because Clooney reportedly demanded that the lead character be played by an actor that matched his physical description.
In a casual talk with Hammond, Darren Aronofsky personally corroborated Corden’s claims; the filmmaker has also already spoken publicly about the various potential iterations of “The Whale.” The director talked about Ford, Clooney, and “Zola” director Janicza Bravo in an interview with Forbes.
