In Just Her First Weekend of Release, M3gan is Crushing at the Box Office
One new film already appears to be grabbing American moviegoers’ interest a week after 2023 officially began. Since the first trailer for the aforementioned movie, “M3GAN,” was made available by Universal Pictures in October of 2022, it has been the subject of discussion. It is not difficult to understand why the first trailer for the movie became popular online.
The movie’s invention of a mechanical doll dubbed M3GAN is the basis for the trailer’s plot, which is also hinted at in one particularly ludicrous, belly-laugh-inducing sequence. In this scene, M3GAN starts dancing in the midst of a dim office hallway.
“M3GAN” has been developing into the first significant horror movie of 2023 ever since that trailer was released. When it was found that the movie was written by Akela Cooper, who had previously garnered notoriety for the bizarre screenplay she had penned for filmmaker James Wan’s haunting thriller “Malignant” in 2021, the excitement surrounding it only increased.

Fans of her previous picture, “Malignant,” were especially eager to see “M3GAN” because it was based on a screenplay that she and director James Wan jointly wrote. It’s reasonable to say that “M3GAN’s” viral anticipation is already beginning to pay off just one full day after the movie opened in theatres in the United States.
“M3gan” Took the No. 1 Spot at the Domestic Box Office
Deadline reports that “M3GAN,” which earned $11.7 million in total across 3,509 theatres, won the top spot at the domestic box office this past Friday. The movie’s opening weekend revenue is now anticipated to be about $27.5 million.
According to BoxOfficeMojo, the movie has made a total of $15.07 million at the global box office as of this writing. Because of its domestic performance, it is now the first January horror movie to open to more than $20 million since “Insidious: The Last Key,” which took in $29.6 million when it debuted in January 2018.
These positive early box office results should please Universal Pictures, Akela Cooper, James Wan, director Gerard Johnstone, and the rest of the “M3GAN” creative team. The movie would have more than doubled its $12 million production budget in only its first three days in theatres if it indeed brings in $27 million this weekend (via Variety).
In other words, negotiations regarding a future sequel are already being held behind the scenes because the movie is already on its way to doing well enough commercially. Naturally, that won’t happen until “M3GAN” continues to have excellent box office results after its opening weekend, which is still to be determined.

However, as anyone who has watched the movie is already aware, “M3GANfinale “‘s does leave room for a potential sequel. In light of this, it seems safe to assume that the movie’s gradual march toward a sequel has already gotten off to a very good start. However, its franchise possibilities will likely entirely hinge on its box office totals beyond this weekend.
