Altered Carbon is coming back just over two years after it first came out. The second season of the sci-fi cyberpunk show, which was created by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and stars Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Takeshi Kovacs, will be out on Netflix on February 27.
In the first season, Joel Kinnaman played the role. Chris Conner, who plays the A.I. Edgar Poe, and Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays the leader of the Envoys, will join Mackie. Simone Missick (Luke Cage), Dina Shihabi (Jack Ryan), Torben Liebrecht (Operation Finale), James Saito (Modern Love), and Lela Loren (Modern Love) are some of the new cast members (Power).
Behind the scenes, creator and showrunner Laeta Kalogridis has been replaced by Alison Schapker (Alias, Fringe), who was first hired as a co-showrunner with Kalogridis before being promoted to sole showrunner. Kalogridis is still an executive producer, and she wrote the first episode of the second season of Altered Carbon.
The first season had 10 episodes, but the second season only has 8. It will probably be based on Broken Angels, the second of three books about Kovacs by English author Richard K. Morgan. Morgan hasn’t written a new one since 2005, but the arrival of the Netflix show in 2018 made him think about going back to the world.
Altered Carbon debuted in February 2018 to mostly positive reviews, but we didn’t think much of it. We called Kovacs a boring and passive character, said the plot and action didn’t make sense, and said the show’s themes about class were lost in a lot of violence.
