Fincher signed a four-year contract with Netflix in November 2020, even though he has been working with the streaming service for the previous five years nearly exclusively. Author Alexis Nolent, writing under the pen name Matz, and illustrator Luc Jacamon is the minds behind the Killer graphic novel series. There are twelve books in the series, which were released between 1998 and 2013. The novels follow an unnamed assassin who, after years of perfecting his craft, starts to falter and experience a psychiatric breakdown.

The main character will be played by Michael Fassbender. It will be his first movie since X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019. The official plot summary for the movie is as follows: After a tragic near-miss, an assassin fights both his employers and himself while on a global manhunt, which he claims isn’t personal.

This movie is the result of Fincher’s most recent partnership with Netflix. His most recent movie, Mank, as well as his television show Mindhunter, may be found on the streamer. Fincher will be directing from a screenplay that Andrew Kevin Walker has adapted. Walker, a BAFTA-nominated author, previously collaborated with Fincher on Se7en. In addition, he has written other movies including Windfall and Sleepy Hollow. Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte, and Michael Fassbender will all appear in The Killer alongside Fassbender.

The graphic novels were first released in French by Editions Casterman, and then they were translated into English and made available in the US by Archaia Studios Press. Ceán Chaffin will produce this movie adaption, and Alexandra Milchan will serve as an executive producer.
