The Walt Disney Company has made numerous films based on its theme parks and other attractions. The most famous and profitable of these is without a doubt the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which spawned a new pop culture hero in the form of Jack Sparrow throughout its five films.
Since then, Disney has consistently attempted to adapt their theme park rides into full-length movies; the films The Country Bears (2002), Tomorrowland (2015), and Jungle Cruise (2017) are just a few examples (2021). Bert & Bertie, who directed Hawkeye in 2021, have signed on to direct a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad feature, so the idea isn’t going anywhere.
The Haunted Mansion is the only attraction in the Walt Disney Parks that seems like it would be a walk in the park to modify. Disney tried to cash in on the popularity of the attraction over two decades ago with the Eddie Murphy-starring The Haunted Mansion, and with its iconic aesthetics and surprisingly extensive backstory, it seems like a natural fit for a feature film.
You might expect a comic like Murphy, who plays the lead, to find the ride hilarious. And while it’s true that the ride has always had a very on-the-nose sense of humor, the film adaptation missed the scary allure of the ride and relied too heavily on the gags, not to mention the absence of legendary characters like the Hat Box Ghost and the Black Widow Bride.

The role that Stanfield is expected to play is that of a widower who formerly had faith in the supernatural but is now a fairly lifeless tour guide in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Haddish, meanwhile, is set to play a clairvoyant who is paid to communicate with the dead.
What is the Plotline of Haunted Mansion?
Although the trailer offered only a brief glimpse into the film’s story, an official synopsis provided some further context:
After learning that her newly purchased estate is haunted, a single mother named Gabbie enlists the aid of a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to rid the house of its spectral inhabitants.
We already know that Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka) will portray Gabbie, that LaKeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You) will play Ben (the tour guide), that Owen Wilson (Kent) will play the priest, and that Tiffany Haddish (the psychic) will play an unknown role (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) We can think of Harriet as the psychic and Danny DeVito’s (Dumbo) nameless professor as the historian.

The majority of the Haunted Mansion’s “pleasant haunts” are, in fact, cheerful. Sometimes they scare people, but other than the Bride, they aren’t mean or harsh. There is strong speculation that the woman, whose original name was Constance Hathaway, murdered her husband (or husbands) and is currently prowling the estate in search of other victims. These two notorious specters would make great antagonists.
Who is Making Haunted Mansion?
At the outset, the Oscar-winning director of The Shape of Water (2017), Guillermo Del Toro, is renowned in the fields of both horror and practical effects. It seems this project, like many others, that Del Toro has attempted, wasn’t meant to be for the talented writer/director, but Justin Simien is more than capable of taking over.

As a result of his work on the highly acclaimed Netflix series of the same name and the massively popular 2014 film of the same name, Dear White People, Simien has emerged as one of the most promising new voices in contemporary narrative. Simien has also joined the cast of Disney’s new Lando series, so he looks to have a lengthy association with the company.

The film’s screenplay was written by Del Toro, D. V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity), and Katie Dippold (The Heat), even though he is no longer attached as director. That means many of Del Toro’s ideas will probably make it into the picture, which is great news for fans of his directing style. Del Toro will not only star but also serve as an executive producer.
