African Queens Njinga Release Date: What Can We Expect From It?

Starz is casting American Gods’ Yetide Badaki as the lead in a drama series based on the life of the African Warrior Queen Nzinga.

Together with Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight, and Mo Abudu, CEO of Nigerian media giant EbonyLife, Badaki will serve as executive producer on Queen Nzinga.

The events of Queen Nzinga, set in Angola in the 17th century, chronicle the rise of a young princess to the throne and her subsequent 40-year guerrilla fight against her kingdom’s powerful opponents and the horrific captivity of her people at the hands of Portuguese slavers. Nzinga will eventually give her life protecting the rights of her people. When Nzinga became the first female ruler, she proclaimed, “Call me king.”

According to Essence.com, On February 15, 2023, the first season of African Queens will launch on Netflix, chronicling the life and legacy of Njinga, the complicated, intriguing, and fierce warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba, the territory known as modern-day Angola.

What Can We Expect From African Queens Njinga?

The series is based on the real-life narrative of Nzinga, a princess who grew up to become a fierce warrior queen.
