Nimona Release Date: Who is Behind the Animation for Nimona?

Nimona, a long-gestating adaptation of ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel, has been purchased by Netflix. Formerly in the works at 20th Century Fox and Disney, the project was scrapped before being brought back to life by Netflix and set for a summer 2023 release.

Nick Bruno and Troy Quane (Spies in Disguise) will helm the Netflix film Nimona, with assistance from DNEG and Annapurna Pictures (Missing Link, Vice, Phantom Thread, Booksmart, etc.).

Written by Marc Haimes, who recently adapted the script for Lost Ollie on Netflix, Nimona will soon be available in theatres.

Nimona’s production history has been rocky because it was first in the works at Fox before being picked up by Disney in 2015. Blue Sky Studios, the animation branch of 20th Century Fox, was tasked with making the film at first.

After being scheduled for 2020, its release date was moved to 2022. Disney declared in February 2021 that it would be closing Blue Sky because it already owned Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, even though production was well started before Disney acquired Fox.

Plenty of people started wondering what would happen to Nimona after that, and people working on the film claimed at the time that it “would likely never see the light of day.” Production on Nimona was abruptly suspended, and the film was ultimately never released.

Nimona’s return has been discussed for months, and in early February 2022, Netflix registered a copyright for the name.

Production on Nimona reportedly resumed in early 2022 after it was announced the film had landed at Netflix a month later.

ND Stevenson tweeted in response to the movie’s acquisition by Netflix:

“Nimona has never stopped being a feisty little tale. She puts up a good fight, and she has some fantastic allies in her corner. I am ecstatic to share the news that ANNAPURA and NETFLIX WILL RELEASE THE NIMONA MOVIE in 2023.

Nimona Plotline: What Can We Expect From It?

As was previously mentioned, Nimona is based on ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, which was initially released as a webcomic in 2012 and then as a graphic novel book in 2015. The graphic novel’s official summary reads as follows:

“Nimona is a young, impulsive shapeshifter with a penchant for mischief. The villainous Lord Ballister Blackheart has a grudge against you. Nimona and Lord Blackheart are going to wreak havoc as sidekicks and supervillains. To disprove the widespread belief that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his fellow cops from the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics are the heroic figures they’ve been made out to be in the kingdom.

Is There a Trailer For Nimona?

To my dismay, that is not the case. Even though Nimona has wrapped production, there has yet to be a trailer released.

In the summer of 2023, Nimona will debut on Netflix. Annapurna Animation’s debut feature film. It’s rated PG for some bloody and gory sequences, as well as for some mild profanity and crude comedy. For more details visit our website
