The Little Mermaid Release Date: Who Else is in the Cast of the Little Mermaid?

Songs like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid have become classics in the decades since the film’s release. A lot of kids who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s appreciate this Disney classic because they can relate to Ariel’s quest for dry land and her eventual fall in love with a human prince.

Although Disney’s announcement in July 2019 that Halle Bailey will play the part of Ariel sparked renewed interest in the live-action remake, it has been in the works for some time.

The 20-year-old is a member of the R&B duet Chloe x Halle, a protege of Beyoncé, and a star on the Freeform series Grown-ish. Another Black Disney princess has been long overdue, as evidenced by the success of The Princess and the Frog and Cinderella starring Brandy. The movie’s release date hasn’t been confirmed, but I already have my ticket in hand.

The Little Mermaid Release Date

According to teenvogue, On May 26, 2023, audiences in theatres around the United States should be able to see The Little Mermaid. You should put this on your calendars right away.

Who is Playing Ariel in the Little Mermaid?

Halle Bailey, a singer, was initially confirmed as the choice to play Ariel in the live-action adaptation back in July 2019. Director Rob Marshall said in a statement at the time, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that “after an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice,” all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.

Halle, best known for performing with her sister Chlöe Bailey as Chloe x Halle, will make her debut as a leading actress in a feature film with her portrayal of Ariel. Halle started acting at a young age, appearing in roles such as minor characters in Last Holiday and the Disney Channel movie Let It Shine.

The 22-year-old actress is best known for her role as Sky Forster on Freeform’s Grown-ish, while she has a few more important films presently in post-production; she will play Young Nettie in the 2023 movie musical The Color Purple.

As soon as Halle’s casting was made public, however, the young actress was the target of widespread racist criticism on the internet. Users took to social media with the hashtag #NotMyAriel to express their displeasure with the film and its protagonist, Ariel, and to express their intention to boycott it once it was released.

When asked by Variety about the criticism she had received, Halle didn’t speak out until the summer of 2022, saying that she had sought the wisdom of her grandparents, who had endured years of discrimination, seeking guidance on how to get past it.

“You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,” they told her, and her words of support were both uplifting and lovely.

What a difference it would have made in my life, how my self-esteem and confidence would have soared. To us, things that seem insignificant to others are enormously significant,” Halle added. I want the young girl inside of me and the other girls who identify with me and are watching to realize that they are unique and deserving of being treated like princesses in every aspect of their lives. I see no reason why they shouldn’t be.

Period. Halle’s experience as Princess Ariel was clearly formative, despite the hate she received online; she adopted a cat and gave it the movie-appropriate name Poseidon while filming. Really, its sight delights us.

Who Else is in the Cast of the Little Mermaid?

The Little Mermaid boasts a star-studded ensemble, although their characters are being kept under wraps at this time.

Whilst there were persistent rumors in early 2019 that Harry Styles was in contention for the role of Prince Eric, the British actor Jonah Hauer-King was ultimately cast in the part. Following the completion of production, Halle Bailey sent an emotional letter to Instagram in which she thanked her cast and crew and referred to Jonah as a “friend for endless lifetimes.”

Javier Bardem, known for his role in Dune, will play King Triton, Ariel’s overprotective father, and Melissa McCarthy will take on the classic character of Ursula. (Kacey Musgraves declined to play Vanessa, Ursula’s human form, in the upcoming 2020 film.) Art Malik, from the Showtime series Homeland, will also play Grimsby, Prince Eric’s devoted butler.

Ariel’s marine friend group has also been finalized. Daveed Diggs, of Hamilton and Blindspotting, will voice Sebastian the crab; Jacob Tremblay, of The Incredibles and Inside Out, will voice Flounder the fish; and Awkwafina will voice a gender-swapped version of Scuttle.

Scuttle was a male seagull in the first cartoon adaptation. As a female diving bird, Scuttle will be featured in more underwater sequences in the new rendition.

Others, including Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley and actors Jessica Alexander and Emily Coates as well as Russell Balogh and Adrian Christopher, have also been cast in the film, though their specific roles have yet to be revealed. (Many supporters believe Simone Ashley will play one of Ariel’s sisters. Here’s hoping!)
