Fans of the David Fincher–produced crime drama Mindhunter didn’t waste any time bingeing the entire second season the moment it became available on Netflix in August of this year.
It appeared that a third season might be on the way after Netflix teased a special David Fincher announcement for October 13 of last year.
The announcement sparked rumors that a third season of Mindhunter was in the works, but when it was revealed that Fincher’s next project was the docuseries Voir — “a series of visual essays honoring cinema” — fans were left disappointed.
In particular, we get a lot of inquiries regarding Mindhunter and its status for a third season on Netflix. Netflix has not made any official statement on the topic, but the actors and crew have been very vocal about wanting a return. Creator David Fincher has said or indicated numerous times that a new season is quite unlikely. What follows is a summary of all we know about Mindhunter Season 3 as of 2023.
Mindhunter Season 3 Release Date
According to Radiotimes, There is currently no word on whether or not Netflix will order a third season of Mindhunter.
In an interview for his upcoming biopic Mank, director David Fincher stated that a third season of Mindhunter is quite unlikely.

Season 3 is unlikely given that the core cast was released from their contracts at the start of 2020 so that they could pursue other employment.
While director David Fincher “may explore” Mindhunter again in the future, he “thought it wasn’t fair to the performers to hold them from seeking other employment while he was exploring new projects of his own,” according to a Netflix spokesman.
After six months, we got an update on Season 3, although it wasn’t all that informative. Erik Messerschmidt, the show’s cinematographer for Season 2, has expressed uncertainty about the show’s future but expressed hope for a third season.
When Could a Potential Mindhunter Season 3 Start Filming?
Unfortunately, it does not appear that production on a third season of Mindhunter will begin any time soon. If season three takes as long to shoot as season two (eight months), then we may not get new episodes for several years.
Who Could Be in the Cast for a Mindhunter Season 3?
The following actors may or may not be available for a third season of Mindhunter.
- Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford
- Holt McCallany as Bill Tench
- Anna Torv as Dr Wendy Carr
- Sonny Valicenti as Dennis Rader/ADT Serviceman/BTK
- Stacey Roca as Nancy Tench
- Joe Tuttle as Greg Smith
- Michael Cerveris as Ted Gunn
- Cameron Britton as Ed Kemper
For director David Fincher to focus on other projects, the contracts of Mindhunter’s three main actors have been terminated: Jonathan Groff (Holden Ford), Holt McCallany (Bill Tench), and Anna Torv (Wendy Carr).
It’s plausible that he could reassemble the main cast of Mindhunter if he ever came back to the show, but he’d have to accommodate their busy schedules and other performing commitments.
In addition to Michael Cerveris as Ted Gunn, the new head of the Behavioral Science Unit, Joe Tuttle as Greg Smith, and Stacey Roca as Bill’s wife Nancy Tench (Roca was elevated to series regular for season 2), are also possible returnees.

As for the show’s other memorable serial killers, such as Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton), Montie Rissell (Sam Strike), and Jerry Brudos, they can only cross their fingers and hope for the best (Happy Anderson).
We believe that if Sonny Valicenti’s role as the ADT serviceman who was discovered to be serial killer Dennis Rader’s BTK was expanded, we would have seen more of the latter.
There are also other shows in a similar genre that can keep you occupied till the debut of the mindhunter series. Such Shows Include The Killer Release Date, The Rookie Season 6 Release Date, and more.
What Can We Expect From Mindhunter Season 3?
Dominick spilled the beans, saying, “For Season 3, they planned to head to Hollywood. This meant that one of them was set to link up with Jonathan Demme and the other was set to hook up with Michael Mann. And it was going to revolve around the concept of profiling entering the zeitgeist, the collective mind.
Would’ve been great if… Everyone was eagerly anticipating that season since it would finally be the time for them to “get out of the basement” and begin. Furthermore, the BTK killer remained a consistent subplot throughout the first two seasons, so we expect it to be continued in the third.
