Now that the 95th Academy Awards have come and gone, eight months will pass before the nominees for the next Oscars are decided upon. There have already been lists predicting who will win at the next ceremony, but it’s only spring of 2023, and there are a lot of variables that will affect which movies from this year will be nominated.
Even though more titles could be added as the months tick by during the year, we already have a very decent sense of what Netflix is delivering in 2023 thanks to its schedule, which is mostly planned out. But we’ll do our best to highlight a few books that stand out as particularly promising for the next awards season.
Pain Hustlers
David Yates, who is best known for directing the vast majority of the films in the Potterverse, has directed this crime thriller. The plot may be engaging enough to win over critics, but that will depend on how the film is received. Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, Chloe Coleman, Jay Duplass, Brian D’Arcy James, Amit Shah, and Andy Garcia are just some of the stars of the pharmaceutical drama.
A blue-collar single mother loses her job and, in an attempt to make ends meet, accepts a position at a struggling pharmaceutical startup, where she quickly becomes embroiled in a potentially lethal racketeering operation.
The Killer
After his Hollywood film Mank received ten nominations and won statuettes for production design and cinematography, director David Fincher returned to Netflix. Even though Fincher is dipping his toes into the seas of the genre with The Killer (an adaptation of a French graphic novel), his ability to elevate whatever material he touches is undeniable.
An assassin struggles against his employers and himself after a near-fatal mistake during a global manhunt he claims isn’t personal.
Maestro
In Meastro, After Bradley Cooper’s previous picture, A Star Is Born, received eight nominations and Best Song for Lady Gaga, it was inevitable that his next project would be awards bait.
Cooper will direct the biopic and appear as Leonard Bernstein using convincing special effects makeup. The only potential issue is that, like all the other films without setting 2023 release dates, Netflix could push it back to 2024.
The romance between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein is chronicled in “Maestro,” a majestic and brave love story. Maestro is an emotionally epic picture of the family loving love as well as a love letter to life and art.
Shirley
One of the last performances of the late Lance Reddick co-stars with Regina King is the legendary American politician Shirley Chisholm. John Ridley wrote the script and directed the film; he received an Oscar for his work on the adaptation of Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.
A lot is riding on this, since King’s directorial debut, One Night in Miami, garnered three nominations and she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2019 for her work in If Beale Street Could Talk. One thing is certain; King and Ridley have a lot of fans.
Shirley depicts Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the United States, as well as the personal cost of her groundbreaking achievements. Based on rare and extensive interviews with family, friends, and those who knew her best, this film will tell the narrative of Chisholm’s ground-breaking and historic presidential campaign.
Rustin
George C. Wolfe, who directed Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, helms this civil rights drama. Chadwick Boseman’s posthumous nomination for Best Actor was one of five nods the film received. Thus, it’s something to watch closely.
“Bayard Rustin, the mastermind behind the historic March on Washington in 1963 and a trusted adviser to Martin Luther King, Jr., devoted his life to the fight for racial justice, human rights, and global democracy. His contributions to the civil rights struggle, however, were mostly forgotten because of his outward homosexuality.
Untitled Wes Anderson
The second Wes Anderson picture to be released in 2023, following Asteroid City at Focus Features/Universal Pictures, will be an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Tale of Henry Sugarman.
The film will star Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, with Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade also appearing in supporting or unspecified parts. It’s tough to tell without seeing the film if it will be Oscar-worthy.
Yet, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, and Isle of Dogs all received nominations in the past, and they can’t all be wrong.
Anderson’s best Oscar hope was the quirky original soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat and the film’s technical achievements, both of which were honored for The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget
Predicting which animated films from studios other than Disney and Pixar will receive nominations is challenging enough without having to guess at the quality of those films.
The animation firm Aardman Animations, responsible for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, is widely regarded as the industry leader when it comes to stop-motion clay animation. In 2006, both The Pirates! and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Nominated in their respective years were Adventure with Scientists! and Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.
It doesn’t hurt that Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is available on Netflix, just received this award.
“After a daring escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has discovered her paradise: a tranquil island where her flock may be safe from the perils of civilization. Ginger’s happily ever after appears to be complete when she and Rocky have a daughter they name Molly.
On the mainland, however, a new and terrifying danger threatens the entire chicken species. This time, Ginger and her team are breaking in, even if it means risking their freedom.
Rebel Moon
With the scope that has been suggested so far, Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, a pretty massive sci-fi fantasy adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s classic film The Seven Samurai (which was nominated for two prizes in 1957), might become a solid technical award contender.
They send a young woman with a secret past named Kora to enlist warriors from adjacent planets to help them mount a stand when their peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the troops of the tyrant Regent Balisarius.
Future acquisitions could also put a kink into existing projections or lists as streamers like Netflix sponsor their originals and seek out film festivals/markets for fresh content throughout the year.
In addition, there are movies that studios and distributors wish to unload after second thoughts about a large or limited theatrical release. This might result in the likes of Amazon, Apple, Hulu, and Netflix taking up any stragglers.
The winners of other award shows play a major factor in determining the frontrunners, thus it’s important to wait until the nominees are published and the show is closer to making accurate predictions. Several titles may emerge as clear frontrunners as time passes and Netflix’s marketing efforts combine with critical acclaim and in-depth evaluations.
