Here is what we know about Shrek 5, including any release date and trailer updates, cast information, and the movie’s plot. Shrek 5 is the much anticipated fifth installment of Dreamworks’ wildly successful film franchise.
Around $450 million was made at the box office for the first Shrek movie, which debuted in 2001. Since then, DreamWorks Animation has released three additional main series films and countless spin-offs featuring the green ogre.
The final main Shrek film to hit theaters was Shrek Forever After, which was meant to be the green ogre’s farewell film, back in 2010. But, there have been whispers about a fifth Shrek movie for years, and fans have been waiting for the swamp dweller to return to the big screen.
Shrek 5 Release Date
According to Thedigitalfix, No Shrek 5 release date has been set as of April 2023, although Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, claims the film will be made.
Since Universal splurge out and acquired DreamWorks Entertainment in 2017, when the skilled executive and producer Chris Meledandri was expected to join the senior leadership of the studio, Shrek 5 has been in development.
Instead, he decided to take over the Shrek brand, putting his initial attention on the new Puss in Boots film (see our review of Puss in Boots 2) as well as a second full-length Shrek adventure.
In April 2023, Meledandri stated that “talks are started now” to secure the original cast’s participation in a new installment of the franchise. It appears as though things are finally moving forward.
Nevertheless, as they wait for Shrek 5, fans will just have to settle for the previous fantasy films and the abundance of memes that are already available.
Shrek 5 Cast Members: Who Are in It?
Eddie Murphy claims that the first release date was intended to be in 2020. Yet it’s clear that date was dropped. According to some sources, the movie will be released in May 2023, however, as far as we can tell, this is untrue since the studio hasn’t even hinted at it.
Whether DreamWorks and Illumination will be bringing the original cast back to reprise their parts from the best films in the franchise is the key question surrounding this upcoming Shrek movie. Chris Meledandri stated in April 2023 that the original voice actors are “a significant element” of his plans.
We expect the cast to return, he continued. The actors are incredibly eager to return, according to every indication we’ve had from the beginning of the talks.
Fortunately, Mike Myers is prepared to reprise the part; the actor recently told GQ that he’d love to do a Shrek film each year. “I found meaning in the idea of evolving from a self-hating ogre to a self-accepting ogre. I enjoy acting out Shrek. I’d be happy to perform one Shrek a year if necessary.
Eddie Murphy, who is also on board, told Etalk (via Digital Spy) that he would “do it in two seconds” if asked to return as Donkey and mocked Puss in Boots by saying he should’ve gotten a spin-off film instead. They have to desire to do it, continued Murphy. Dreamworks, give me a call if you want to do it. I’m seated and prepared to do Donkey.
Puss in Boots 2’s last scene shows Antonio Banderas’ character and his comrades traveling to the kingdom of Far Far Away to visit “some old acquaintances,” so there may also be good news for Puss in Boots lovers.
According to Banderas, who appears enthusiastic, “It doesn’t depend on me; typically, sequels are picked by the audience. According to how people are reacting to Puss in Boots if they flock to the theater in droves, there may be a chance that Puss will appear in another film. Maybe, as the film suggests when you see Far Far Away in the end, they are going to visit some old pals at the conclusion — perhaps Shrek is coming back.”
It will be interesting to see how Cameron Diaz and the rest of the Shrek ensemble feel about maybe making one final trip to the swamp in Shrek 5 (or whatever the final title is).
Shrek 5 Plotline: What Can We Expect From It?
As of April 2023, the Shrek 5 plot has not been officially announced, but Meledandri says she wants to “honor the essential features” of the franchise.
“It’s not all that different from the process we went through with [the Super Mario movie] where you look at what the basic features are that consumers have appreciated, and you do your absolute best to honor those core qualities,” he said. Then you start working hard to create fresh people and plot elements that transport you to entirely new settings.
Screenwriter Michael McCullers, who has previously worked on Thunderbirds, The Boss Baby, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, is tasked with reimagining Shrek. In a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McCullers hinted at his approach to the work.
It means a lot to me personally. It’s had a significant reinvention, which I guess I can’t talk about right now. The characters are well-known and fantastic because there have been four movies and a ton of materials about them, but you also need to come up with a fresh perspective at that time.
The creators of Puss in Boots 2 hinted that the Shrek 5 teaser that appeared at the end of the film was essentially an accident.
There are also other shows in a similar genre that can keep you occupied till the debut of the Shrek series. Such Shows Include Queen Charlotte a Bridgerton Story, Redo the Healer Season 2, and more.
Shrek 5 Trailer Details

Conclusion
It appears that Shrek 5 will take place after many years of waiting. When that large (and occasionally nice) ogre named Shrek entered our lives back in 2001, he completely transformed everything, and he has remained our favorite green ogre ever since.
The Shrek franchise, which includes Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After, has amassed over $1 billion in box office revenue over the past 20 years. For more details visit our website Jerseyshorevibe.com
