The original John Wick movie hit theatres in 2014, and since then, the brand has expanded at a dizzying rate, giving rise to several follow-up movies, prequels, and even video games and spin-offs.
John Wick: Chapter 4, the fourth installment in the series, has officially opened in UK theatres, with Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the titular assassin alongside a cast that includes newcomers Bill Skarsgrd, Clancy Brown, and Donnie Yen.
A spin-off film named Ballerina has already finished filming, and a TV miniseries prequel focusing on the early days of Winston at The Continental Hotel will debut on Peacock at a yet-to-be-announced date.
Nevertheless, will the John Wick franchise continue with future sequels? Keep reading for all the details, but be warned that this article contains substantial John Wick: Chapter 4 spoilers.
Will There Be a John Wick 5?
A simple yes seemed to be the answer to this question in the summer of 2020, but a lot has happened since then.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer indicated in August 2020 that filming on Chapter 5 will begin simultaneously with the release of the fourth installment; however, production on the sequel was halted in March 2021, and the film does not appear to be moving forward at this time.
All four films have been directed by Chad Stahelski, who told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2023: “Keanu and I have decided to call it quits for the time being. John Wick is getting a break from here on out.”
Further, he said “The studio undoubtedly has a strategy. If it’s a huge hit and things start getting weird, we’ll pause for a sec of peace.”
When asked by Total Film about the film’s prospects, Keanu Reeves was more optimistic, saying, “You have to see how the audience responds to what we created.” Only because audiences have responded positively have we been allowed to create these films. It will be interesting to observe how the public reacts to it. Maybe it will appeal to them.
The events of Chapter 4 raise the question of whether a new film is even warranted. The film ends with the protagonist seemingly dead, but star Ian McShane told RadioTimes.com that he believes the death can be undone.
I think it’s adequately cryptic; take it in any direction you choose, he replies. “I believe it was written that way on purpose, to allow for anything to happen. Maybe even another one in the future. I don’t think John Wick has hung it up yet!”
There’s no reason to rule out making a fifth film in the main narrative just yet, but fans shouldn’t get their hopes up either.
John Wick 5 Potential Release Date
According to Radiotimes, The film is still under post-production, so while a specific release date for 2024 has not been established, it is certainly possible. When we get additional information, we’ll be sure to pass it along.
There have been rumors of further big-screen spin-off projects, including a feature about Halle Berry’s character Sophia and a crossover with the Bob Odenkirk action thriller Nobody, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
John Wick 5 Cast Members: Who Are in It?
It’s safe to assume that franchise mainstays Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne will return to their respective roles as Winston and The Bowery King in the event of a John Wick sequel and that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the titular character.
Rina Sawayama could return as Akira if the post-credits scene in John Wick 4 pans out as planned, and Ana de Armas, who played the part of Rooney in the spin-off, could be brought into the main narrative as well.
We’ll keep you posted if/when we hear that Anjelica Huston, Halle Berry, or Shamier Anderson have signed on for a sequel.
John Wick 5 Plotline: What Can We Expect From It?
Given that there is no guarantee that a John Wick 5 would be made, it would be premature to speculate on the plot. So any new sequel would have to start with John faking his death and describing how he survived the trauma at the end of Chapter 4.
As hinted at in the film’s post-credits scene, Akira, played by Rina Sawayama, is expected to play a significant role in John Wick 5 as she seeks to bring John out of retirement to help her avenge her father’s death. We will update this article as soon as any new information becomes available, so check back frequently.
Are There Any Spin-Offs in Development?
Absolutely. The film Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as the deadly ballerina Rooney, is now in production (previously portrayed by Unity Phelan in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum). The spin-off features returns from Ian McShane, Keanu Reeves, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick. The shoot kicked off in Prague in November of last year.
The Continental, another spin-off in production, will premiere on Peacock later this year. Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell feature in the prequel series, which details Winston Scott’s (Woodell) rise to power as the owner of the Continental Hotel in the 1970s.
NME gave the film four stars, saying, “John Wick: Chapter 4 is a lot.” Almost three hours long, it has a slew of new characters, more of the series’ signature convoluted mythology, and even a brief horse pursuit through the desert that seems to be an homage to Lawrence of Arabia.
And yet, this follow-up to a reasonably basic revenge action film from 2014 also appears determined to prove a thesis about self-indulgent blockbuster bloat: that it’s not an issue if the audience is having a good time with it.
There are also other shows in a similar genre that can keep you occupied till the debut of the john wick series. Such Shows Include Mandalorian Season 3, Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon Season 4, and more.
Conclusion
There will soon be a prequel series to the “John Wick” movies that will reveal the history of The Continental and its key actors. For more details visit our website Jerseyshorevibe.com
