This story takes place 64 years before the first Hunger Games. As stated in the official summary, the plot centers on “a young Coriolanus who is the last hope for his failing lineage,” the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from favor in a postwar Capitol. Snow’s job security is at risk, therefore he must grudgingly take on the role of mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, a teenager from the poor District 12.
But after Lucy Gray’s charisma captivates the people of Panem, Snow sees a chance to change their destinies. Snow joins forces with Lucy Gray to improve their chances of rescuing his hard-won possessions. Snow races against time to discover whether he will become a songbird or a snake by fighting his conflicting desires.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Plotline: What Can We Expect From It?
The film will be set 64 years before the first Hunger Games book was published, meaning that characters like Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark will not have been born yet.
Ten years have passed since the district’s First Rebellion, often known as the Dark Days, and the story focuses on a young Coriolanus Snow when he is just 18 years old, long before he became the despotic leader we know from The Hunger Games.
The official plot summary reads as follows: “Young Coriolanus is handsome and charming, and though the Snow family has fallen on hard times, he sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor for the Tenth Hunger Games… only to have his elation dashed when he is assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.”
Lawrence and Jacobson have previously teased fans with more information, promising a fresh take on the world of Panem.
“To be able to show a different side of Panem at a different time in its history has been exciting,” Jacobson said in an early peek at the upcoming prequel for Vanity Fair. “It has an entirely new aesthetic in terms of presentation, personality, and point of view.”
According to Lawrence, “We also get to remake District 12, remake all of the Capitol, and a brand-new arena,” all of which are being designed by production designer Uli Hanisch to give viewers a “new version” of Panem.
“Suzanne has done such a great job going back into the mythology and telling a story about the creation of the world,” Lawrence went on to say. You learn a bit about Katniss’s history. Many of the origins of songs like “The Hanging Tree” and “Snow” will be revealed, as will the history of the Games and other musical genres.
