A New Creative Canvas on the Horizon- Point Beach Arts
The creative culture and the arts are alive in Point Pleasant Beach thanks to the new Point Beach Cultural Arts Committee.
The Committee was commissioned by the township and formed in the Spring of 2018 as part of the Borough’s activities related to the program Sustainable New Jersey. Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs in many different areas.
The Point Beach Arts mission is to promote the arts throughout the town of Point Pleasant.
According to Cathy Jamison, Marketing Chair for Point Beach Arts, “The PPB Arts Committee will guide resources, furnish information, and advocate an environment to cultivate education, venues, and events for all genres of art, promoting art groups and artists, throughout the town to enhance the quality of life for residents and guests of all ages.”
The new Point Beach Cultural Arts committee, will be organizing workshops and events all year long, including: poetry and writing, painting and sculpture, music, photography, children’s programming, theatre, dance, and film.
Local artists will be opening their studios and shops for an art walk, there will be a standing art exhibition in the Municipal Building which will change monthly, art competitions--and more.
Councilman, Paul Kanitra was instrumental in the creation of the committee and met with future committee volunteers. Kanitra then asked Gerrie Vergona to chair the committee. Vergona is a retired professor and corporate manager, as well as an artist with abundant non-profit management and volunteer experience.
"There was, and still is, terrific enthusiasm among all the volunteers," Kanitra said. The many volunteers are the backbone of the endeavor and make everything done by the PPB Arts Committee possible.
The PPB Arts Committee has plans to continue building on their event-scheduling process, continue developing ideas offered by their creative volunteers, expand fundraising to provide more art and art activities, and increasingly build their communications programs so more people are aware of the exciting art Point Beach is offering.
“In addition to monthly exhibits of art at Borough Hall, and ongoing digital photography educational sessions, 2019 promises to be very exciting.” Jamison said.
If you are creative or interested in the arts and culture in Point Pleasant Beach, you’ll want to get involved.
