Your 2019 Memorial Day Weekend Guide to the Jersey Shore

Memorial Day is a uniquely American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

It is a time for parades, flags, and wreath-laying ceremonies paying tribute to the men and women who died serving our country.

The Jersey Shore has some of the best places to honor our American Heroes, our war memorials are places of remembrance and quiet serenity, places that truly honor our fallen.

Here are some of the places and ceremonies you can attend to pay your respect.

The Sunset Flag Ceremony and the Veterans Memorial Garden in Jackson

Flag Ceremony at Sunset Beach May 27 Cape May

The Evening Flag Ceremony is a 40-year Tradition at Sunset Beach and is held daily at 7 pm Memorial Day weekend through August, and at 6 pm on Saturdays in September. This tradition has been a staple in Cape May for over 40 years. Every one of the flags that are flown at the ceremony are veterans' casket flags that families bring with them from their loved one's funeral. Cape May is honored to fly them at Sunset Beach. If you have not experienced this emotionally moving tradition, we invite you to be a participant in this celebration of being an American.

Veteran's Memorial Garden May 27 Jackson

A great place to honor Veterans on Memorial Day. The garden features a cascading waterfall, granite columns and multiple flags. In addition, the Veterans Memorial Garden honors all past, present and future members of the Armed Forces.
