Get Your Kicks on Route 36
From Highlands to Asbury Park
The ultimate Jersey Shore Scenic Drive- Route 36 and Ocean Avenue
It’s one of the Jersey Shore’s versions of the Pacific Coast Highway (just none of the death-defying cliffs with little or no guard rail) located near the northern tip of Monmouth county.
This beautiful drive begins in Highlands, NJ the “top” of the Jersey Shore.
The Highlands is a quaint little town nestled on the Atlantic with a great view of Sandy Hook. If you’re up on the bluffs above, on a clear day you can get a spectacular view of New York City. Highlands has great shops and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for some classic seafood, stop by Bahr’s Landing, a Jersey Shore institution.
For the nautical and history buff, or just for the great view Twin Lights is a definite stop off.
Another must visit is the 9-11 memorial atop Mount Mitchell. With a direct view of New York and the Freedom tower, the memorial is a chilling yet peaceful reminder about what happened that day and commemorating the locals who were lost.
Continue on down Route 36 South and drive through Rumson which is located above the Navesink River Inlet and the barrier island. It has some amazing mansions and tony shops.
Next on our scenic drive on the island you will encounter Sea Bright. a lovely, two-lane, barrier island town. Shore traffic can be a bit tight here so be prepared for a wait. Luckily if you have to wait too long, there are plenty of places to stop. Sea Bright has great nightlife, amazing restaurants and bars. Cabana clubs and gorgeous beaches line this strip of the shore. Looking for a little entertainment, food or drink? Before leaving Sea Bright, stop by Donovan’s Reef. It’s located right on the beach and features live music, good food and drink and view that will keep you coming back.
Winding its way south, suddenly, Route 36 becomes something a little more fabulous, with a little different view, now it’s Ocean Avenue. Next you’ll encounter Monmouth Beach, Deal and Allenhurst, all with beautiful expansive beaches, manicured lawns, private beach clubs and multi-million dollar mansions.
Drive on a little further and Ocean Avenue and the scenery is about to take on a whole new vibe.
You are about to come upon one the coolest little towns on our trip down “The Hip Strip”.
It’s the place where Bruce Springsteen got his start, a place that has been attracting people since the late 1800’s.
Greetings from Asbury Park!
An intense music scene, the famed Stone Pony is here, it boasts amazing restaurants and hotels and a boardwalk that is thriving.
